Resolving the Past

Step 8

“As forgiven people, free from condemnation, we made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves, determined to root our fear, hidden hostility, and contempt for the world.”

Like many of us, David E. can trace his struggle with same-sex attraction to a poor relationship with his father. His father was an angry man with a loud voice that frightened David when he was a little boy. He detached, withdrew into his bedroom and a world of fantasy, and the damage was done.

Why Is It So Difficult for Me to Make Friends?

Step 12

“We determined to mature in our relationships with men and women, learning the meaning of a partnership of equals, seeking neither dominance over people nor servile dependency on them.”

Some of you, I trust, have been putting these suggestions into practice and have begun to make true friends and are rejoicing in the experience. You may be asking, “Is that all there is?” No. Having made friends, you must learn to keep them.

I can hear the screams! “More work!” Yes, but please remember that sloth is one of the seven deadly sins and that friendships are vital not only to your emotional health but also to your physical health.

Points to Ponder

"When the ungodly and the godly fall into the same sin, how can we distinguish between them? By a simple test, -- a test by which you may know a sheep from a swine, when they both have fallen into the same slough, and are, in fact, so bemired, that you can hardly tell the one from the other. The unclean animal, in circumstances agreeable to its nature, wallows in the mire; but the sheep (type of the godly) fills the air with its bleatings, nor ceases to struggle to get out." [Thomas Guthrie in D. L. Moody, One Thousand and One Thoughts from My Library, (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, n.d.), p. 91]

"Defeat is not bitter unless you swallow it." [Joe Clark in EveryDay Quotations edited by Jack Maguire, (Garden City, NY: Doubleday Direct, Inc., 1998), p. 139]

"Jesus told his followers to hide their acts of piety; he did not tell them to hide their emotions. In fact, we  sometimes hide our emotions for the same reason that we make a show of our piety: out of a wish to seem more perfect that we are." [Garret Keizer, The Enigma of Anger: Essays on a Sometimes Deadly Sin, (San Francisco: Josey-Bass, 2002), p. 231]
