Warning!!! Danger!!!

While the media have grown weary of the story of AIDS and have moved on to what they consider “greener pastures” (like the latest scandal in the life of the newest celebrity), HIV is still doing its terrible work in the land and this most likely to be affected are still men who have sex with men.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Of the estimated 342,148 male adults and adolescents living with HIV/AIDS, 61% had been exposed through male-to-male sexual contact, 18% had been exposed through injection drug use, 13% had been exposed through high-risk heterosexual contact, and 7% had been exposed through both male-to-male sexual contact and injection drug use.” [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report 2004, Vol. 17, (Atlanta: US Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006), p. 3]

Why Is It So Difficult for Me to Make Friends?

Step 12
“We determined to mature in our relationships with men and women, learning the meaning of a partnership of equals, seeking neither dominance over people nor servile dependency on them.

Q. “Why can’t mummies keep friends?’

A. “Because they’re too wrapped up in themselves.” [Reader’s Digest, (October 2007), p. 158]

While that’s a joke, for many of us it hits too close to home to be funny.

Points to Ponder

"Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we Thine unworthy servants do give Thee most humble and hearty thanks for all Thy goodness and lovingkindness to us, and to all men. We bless Thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for Thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech Thee, give us that due sense of all Thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth Thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to Thy service, and by walking before Thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen." [The Book of Common Prayer quoted in EveryDay Quotations edited by Jack Maguire, (Garden City, NY: Doubleday Direct, Inc., 1993), p. 158]

"Have you ever been left, used, or hurt? And asked yourself, What in the world am I doing wrong? You're not alone. When we're wounded by people, it's second nature to blame our need for attachment. You may think, There I go again, trusting people and not God, or Just goes to show you, people can't be depended on. Though it's true that people aren't perfect lovers the way God is, Scriptures teachers that God created us for relationship with both him and with each other.... The problem isn't our need for friendship and connection.... But without the proper maturity and skills, that need for support and attachment can get us into real trouble. The real problem is that we are untrained in discerning the character of people." [Henry Cloud and John Townsend, Safe People: How To Find Relationships That Are Good For You And Avoid Those That Aren't, (Grand Rapids: Zondervan PublishingHouse, 1995), p. 19-20]

"The devil only wants to get the wedge of a little allowed sin into your hearts, and you will soon be his own. Never play with fire; never trifle with little sins!" [J. C. Ryle in D. L. Moody, One Thousand and One Thoughts from My Library, (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, n.d.), p. 128]
